How to grow on X: 12 tips that follow the algorithm

Updated October 2, 2026 · 5 min read

Growing on X comes down to three habits: start conversations instead of chasing likes, reply a lot (to others and under your own posts) within 48 hours, and stay in one topic long enough for the algorithm to know who to show you to. Here are 12 tips, each tied to what the X algorithm actually scores.

1. Pick a lane and stay in it

Out-of-network posts are found by matching what a post is about, and who wrote it, with what each viewer engages with. If you post about SaaS on Monday, football on Tuesday and politics on Wednesday, the system can't tell who your posts are for. Pick one or two topics you can talk about for a year and keep 80% of your posts there.

2. Write for replies, not likes

A reply weighs 5, a like 0.5. A post that gets ten replies beats a post that gets fifty likes. End with a real question, share a number people want to compare with their own, take a clear position people can add to. "Thoughts?" doesn't count as a question: ask something specific.

3. Make posts people want to send to someone

Sharing via copy link weighs 20, sharing via DM 5: the highest positive signals in the code. People share what's useful to someone else: a template, a tool, a number, a clear explanation, a take their team should read. Before posting, ask yourself: who would someone send this to?

4. Answer every reply in the first hours

Your post has 48 hours of life in the For You feed. The replies under it are conversations that raise the chances of more replies. Be there in the first hours after posting, and answer with something more than "thanks!": a reply that asks back keeps the thread going.

5. Build mutuals

Since July 2026, a reply between two people who follow each other weighs 20 instead of 5. Your mutuals are your most valuable audience. Follow back the people in your niche who engage with you, and talk to them regularly: they're the ones whose replies push your posts the most.

6. Reply to bigger accounts in your niche

Your posts reach your followers. Your replies reach someone else's. A good reply under a post from a larger account in your topic is seen by people who don't know you yet, and the best ones make readers follow you. It's the fastest way to grow from zero. We wrote a full guide on it: the reply strategy.

7. Post every day, but don't flood

Accounts under 1,000 followers can get a cold-start boost on fresh posts, so showing up regularly pays off while you're small. But the feed is built to stay varied: three similar posts in a row compete with each other. One or two strong posts a day, spaced out, beat five weak ones back to back.

8. Earn the follow inside the post

Following the author from a post weighs 4, profile clicks weigh 0. The follow has to happen on the post itself: make it clear what people will get if they follow you, through the post being exactly the kind of thing you always post. A consistent lane (tip 1) does most of the work.

9. Put the value in the post, the link in a reply

The code has no explicit link penalty, but opening a link weighs 0.2 and a link takes people away from the conversation. Write the useful part in the post itself, and put the link in a reply if people need it.

10. Avoid anything people would mute

Mute weighs −58.8, "not interested" −43.2, report −234. Rage-bait, clickbait hooks, "RT if you agree" and off-topic provocations raise the chance that people react that way, and that weighs on your score for every similar viewer. See the mistakes that kill reach.

11. Make your profile convert

When someone does land on your profile, they decide in seconds. A clear bio (who you are, what you post about, for whom), a pinned post that shows your best work, and a photo of your face. It won't change the ranking, but it changes how many visitors become followers.

12. Track what starts conversations

Look at your posts by replies, not by likes or impressions. Which topics and formats got people talking? Do more of those. Free tools and X's own analytics are enough to start: see the tools to grow on X.

Questions

How long does it take to grow on X?

It depends on how much you reply and how consistent your topic is. Most accounts that reply every day in one niche see their first real growth within a few weeks. Our guide on the first 1,000 followers has a day-by-day routine.

How many times a day should I post on X?

One to three good posts a day, spaced out, is plenty. Replies count more than extra posts: 20 thoughtful replies a day will do more for a small account than 5 more posts.

What is the best time to post on X?

The ranking code has no time-of-day bonus. What matters is that your followers are online while the post is fresh, and that you're there to answer replies during the first hours. Check when your audience is active in your analytics.

Do I need X Premium to grow?

No. The For You scoring weights in the open-source code have no Premium bonus. X does say Premium replies get prioritized in conversations, which can help if you grow by replying, but plenty of accounts grow without it.
